Thousands of doses of rabies vaccine are being dropped over northern Vermont this week to try to immunize raccoons.

The 400,000 doses are being dropped in fishmeal cakes.

The Vermont Health Department says there have been 110 cases of rabies reported mostly in raccoons so far this year.

By the same time last year, there only had been 38.

Quebec reports it’s had 41 cases of animal rabies this year, compared to only two through this time last year.

No human cases of rabies have been reported in Vermont this year.
