Record numbers of Vermonters go to the polls

It looks like a record number of Vermonters cast ballots in Tuesday’s election. Unofficial estimates by The Associated Press put turnout at slightly more than 310,000 voters. That would top the previous record of 297,000 set four years ago.

It does not appear, however, that the percentage of registered voters casting ballots will set a record. Although the official number of registered voters will not be known until next week, roughly 72 or 73 percent of registered voters cast ballots on Tuesday, which is just below the record 76 percent set in 1992.
