The regional chapter of the American Red Cross wants to boost its volunteer corps.

It’s launching a new online tool called "Volunteer Connection," which allows users to type in a zip code and an area of interest, and locate a need.

Red Cross spokesman Doug Bishop hopes Internet users will try the match-making service.

"Between the economy and what we all seem to have going on in our lives these days it’s difficult to squeeze in a volunteer opportunity and that’s why we have to constantly remind folks of the availability of that option, that people have the ability and we hope the desire to help their community," Bishop said.

The Red Cross will also be recruiting volunteers at the HomeLife Expo at the Dartmouth Field House in Hanover this weekend.

The new initiative comes in the wake of two major disasters in recent years and a winter plagued by house fires.
