It can be hard to remember the flooding this spring, now that the level of Lake Champlain has dropped a full eight feet.

Imagine you live in a section of Plattsburgh and your home was severely damaged by the heavy rains and flooding that occurred this spring. You apply for individual flood disaster relief from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and your request is denied. Then, you find out that a Vermonter living just across the Lake made the same request to FEMA in response to the same kind of damage, and FEMA said "yes."

Folks in northern New York don’t have to imagine the scenario-they’re living it, and as you can imagine, they’re not too happy about it.

Today on our Friday Regional Report, we’re speaking with reporter Joe LoTemplio, who’s written about this controversy in the Plattsburgh Press Republican.

LoTemplio tells VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb there’s no question that people living in parts of northern New York suffered flood damage just as bad as their neighbors in Vermont.
