Regulators approve wind project in national forest

Vermont utility regulators have approved a wind project that could become the first in the country on national forest land.

The Deerfield Wind project would be made up of 17 turbines on the Green Mountain National Forest in Searsburg and Readsboro.

Opponents criticized the project on a number of grounds, including that it would be built on critical bear habitat.

The Public Service Board imposed conditions that regulators say should protect the bears.

The wind project still needs approval from federal authorities, including the U.S. Forest Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Fish and Wildlife Service.
