A new report says it pays to shop around for hospital care in New Hampshire.

The state’s Insurance Department released a report showing the cost of services varies greatly from hospital to hospital.

The report says treatment costs at Speare Memorial Hospital, in Plymouth, are typically almost 20 percent less than the state average. Patients seeking similar services at Exeter Hospital can expect to pay about 50 percent more than the average.

New Hampshire Citizens Health Initiative Co-Chair Paul Spiess says the importance of the report should not be underestimated as employers and residents grapple with high health care costs.

The group commissioned the report to promote transparency in the state’s health care system.
