Republicans rap Symington, Zuckerman on Intervale compost woes

Vermont Republicans are accusing two liberal political leaders of environmental hypocrisy.

The charges came after a state environmental enforcement action against Burlington’s Intervale Center sustainable farming program.

Republicans are criticizing Democratic House Speaker Gaye Symington of Jericho, the Intervale’s development coordinator. And Representative David Zuckerman of Burlington farms a plot in the intervale.

The Agency of Natural Resources has charged the Intervale with violating several state rules, including draining leachate from its compost piles into a swampy area.

Symington says she finds the Republican’s charges offensive and aren’t appropriate for a public policy conversation.
