(Host) Former state senator Cheryl Rivers has kicked off her campaign seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. Rivers, who was elected to six terms as a senator from Windsor County, made her announcement Tuesday afternoon to a gathering of friends and supporters in the Senate Chamber at the Statehouse.
Rivers identified a number of priority issues that she wants to focus on if she’s elected lieutenant governor in November:
(Rivers) “Vermont needs a strong independent lieutenant governor, who understands the interdependence of the important issues facing our state. We need a lieutenant governor who realizes that economic security, universal health care, fair prescription drug prices, a healthy economy, a thriving agricultural sector and a world class cradle-to-grave educational system are all vital to our state’s future.”
(Host) Rivers will face a challenge in the Democratic primary. Former state Senator Jan Backus says she also plans to run for the party’s nomination.
Incumbent Republican Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie says it’s too early for him to discuss his future political plans, but many party members are urging Dubie to seek another term in office.
