Civilizations from the Aztecs to the ancient Greeks and the Egyptians to the Chinese relied on herbal remedies to treat illnesses and wounds. The Old Testament even mentions using plants like mandrake, caraway and barley for medicine.

Today the practice of using plants and herbs to medically treat ailments is known as herbalism.

Rosemary Gladstar runs the Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center and Botanical Sanctuary outside of Orange. Gladstar first learned about herbs and plants from her grandmother. She was part of a group that started teaching and doing plant work in the 1970s; they learned mainly from their elders and by experimentation.

Now, Gladstar is among those passing along knowledge of herbs and plants and how they can be medicinal aids. She spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about herbalism.
