Route 4 bridge problems confirmed; weight limit likely

As businesses in New Hampshire and Vermont brace for major changes because of weight restrictions on a bridge between the states, officials in both states are working to ease the pain.

Officials are banning trucks weighing more than 10 tons from the Route 4 bridge over the Connecticut River between Lebanon and White River Junction.

Heavy trucks will have to take detours to get into Vermont and because federal weight limits in Vermont are lower than in New Hampshire, the trucks cannot use the nearby Interstate 89 bridge.

Vermont already asked for a waiver to allow heavier trucks on the interstate, but was turned down. Transportation Agency spokesman John Zicconi says the state will file an appeal in a day or so, asking for a waiver until the Route 4 problem is solved.
