People in the Rutland County town of Ira are eagerly awaiting the arrival of broadband Internet service.

Comcast cable is wiring the town now as part of an agreement the company made with state regulators when Comcast took over the cable network that had been run by Adelphia.

Comcast is eager to trumpet its work so that it doesn’t get lost amid all the discussion of the new Vermont Telecommunications Authority lawmakers authorized this year.

The new Vermont Telecommunications Authority will be looking for private companies to make proposals for extending broadband Internet service to areas that currently lack it.

Officials say Comcast will be welcome as a bidder.

Comcast is planning line extensions this year in 58 communities.
