Rutland employee appeals firing

Rutland officials are trying to figure out how to handle the appeal of a former employee who was fired.

Newly elected city Treasurer Wendy Wilton fired Debra Bearss, the former human resources and information technologies coordinator.

Bearss was not part of the unionized bargaining unit.

So she appealed her firing to the city’s Board of Civil Authority, which was made up of the aldermen and the mayor.

But now members of the board worry that they could be called to testify at the appeal and may not be able to sit in judgment.

The city attorney is weighing how to handle the issue.
