Rutland fights elimination of train service

A plan to cut passenger rail service between Rutland and New York City in a cost-cutting move is facing opposition in Rutland.

The state wants to eliminate part of a 241-mile Amtrak route, replacing it with bus service running between Albany and Burlington and stopping in Rutland. The savings: $1.4 million to the state’s transportation budget.

Christopher Parker, executive director of the Vermont Rail Action Network, says eliminating the rail service would reduce public transit use at a time when Vermont needs more of it, not less.

On Monday, a save-the-train rally is planned at 4 p.m. at the Rutland train station.
