Vermont’s largest electric utility and the city of Rutland are getting the go-ahead for a pilot solar streetlight program.
The Public Service Board approved the collaborative project between Green Mountain Power and Rutland.
GMP is planning to buy and install eight solar-powered LED streetlights in Depot Park. The new lights will be more efficient than the lights they are replacing and they will still have ornamental-style design like the existing poles.
The new lights are expected to produce about 93 percent of the electricity they consume.
GMP CEO Mary Powell says the project is part of the utility’s commitment to make Rutland the solar capital of New England.
