(Host) Rutland County Republicans have nominated Pittsford Representative Peg Flory to fill the county senate seat left vacant by retiring senator Hull Maynard.

More than one hundred republicans from across Rutland County attended last night’s caucus. Three candidates were nominated and after a secret ballot, Peg Flory came out on top. Flory lives in Pittsford and practices law in Rutland. She has served in the statehouse for eleven years.

Rutland attorney and former gubernatorial candidate Bill Meub was second. Rutland City alderman Tom DePoy followed. All three names will be forwarded to Governor Jim Douglas who will make the final decision.

Bradford Broyles is Chairman of the Rutland County Republicans.

(Broyles) "People are concerned about  the direction that the county is taking and this is an important choice that the governor is going to make regarding our representation here for the county."

(Host) Broyles says he was pleased by the large turnout for last night’s meeting. While there were no surprise nominations from the floor, he says there was plenty of passionate discussion about the issues. Considering how tough the last election cycle was for Republicans, he says there’s a noticeable change in the party’s mood this year.

(Broyles) "There’s so much momentum now and enthusiasm at the party level where we have people that are getting involved in the party that either haven’t been or have decided that now’s the time to get active because they’re concerned with the direction that the state is going. So I think looking forward this bodes well for Republican Party in Rutland County for 2010."

(Host) While Governor Douglas will have the list of republican candidates nominated by Rutland county, he is free to appoint whomever he chooses to fill the senate seat. His decision is expected by the end of the year.
