Rutland officials want to know if city residents are willing to pay to continue adding fluoride to the public water system.

The Public Works Committee wants the board of aldermen to get feedback from residents on whether they think fluoride should continue to be added to the public water supply even though the cost is going to almost double.

Mayor Christopher Louras asked the board to consider cutting fluoride after the expected cost for 2009 jumped $6,000 to a total of $14,000.

Rutland has been adding fluoride to the water for 26 years to help reduce tooth decay. It took two decades and three city-wide votes before it was approved in 1982.
