Saint Johnsbury may face fines over spills

The town of Saint Johnsbury may be facing fines or other penalties for two spills that contaminated local waterways.

The Agency of Natural Resources has notified town officials that enforcement is warranted and it plans to seek legal proceedings before the Environmental Court.

The action comes after about 18,000 gallons of raw sludge leaked from the lagoons of the town’s water treatment facility into Stiles Brook a year ago.

And in May, a sewer line broke and dumped sewage into the Passumpsic River.

Town official say both problems have been fixed.
