A new novel by Vermont author Valerie Hurley tells the story of a precocious New York teenager and the school guidance counselor who befriends her. In the book “St. Ursula’s Girls Against the Atomic Bomb,” Rain Marie Rasserby is making a second attempt at graduating high school, but seems more concerned about the world’s problems than going to college. Frustrated with being a Catholic, she pronounces herself a Jew and sets about organizing a nuclear protest group. Rain’s guidance councilor is taken with her eccentricity, and their friendship leads them to insights about their faith, and their place in the world.
