One of Vermont’s statewide officeholders has opted not to run for re-election after all.

State Auditor Thomas Salmon says he’s accomplished what he hoped he would when he was elected in 2007.

Salmon says he most likely will get a job with the federal government, although he also has an offer from an accountant firm.

Salmon is the one of only two Republicans who holds statewide office. Republican State Senator Vincent Illuzzi says he may run for auditor because of his experience as a prosecutor and longtime legislator.

"I would be a good fit," Illuzzi said. "So I’m going to give it serious consideration."

Candidates have until the middle of next month to decide whether they’re running.
