There’s a new sheriff in Bennington County.
Gov. Jim Douglas announced the appointment Monday of Deputy Sheriff Chad Schmidt to succeed Sheriff Gary Forrest, who recently retired after 24 years in the job.
Schmidt, of Pownal, has served 14 years in the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department. He’s a criminal justice graduate of Southern Vermont College and also the Vermont Police Academy.
