School District Seeks Revenues Rather Than Cuts

Officials in Hartford have ended a long debate about whether to save money by consolidating its three elementary schools and have instead decided to go after new revenue by attracting tuition-paying students to the high school.

The school board has asked Superintendent Tom DeBalsi to create a five-year plan to attract tuition students to the high school, where enrollment is 600, down from over 650 in 2010

DeBalsi said closing one or more of the town’s three elementary schools, touted by proponents as a money saver, would create other costs such as the need to expand another building to accommodate all the students while still maintaining the buildings that closed.

While the number of elementary school students has stayed constant, high school enrollment has been falling.
