School testing compact will lower costs of standardized exams

Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island are working together on a standardized testing program for schools. The schools have to use standardized tests to comply with federal education law.

Bud Meyers, Vermont’s deputy commissioner for standards and assessment, says the three states will save money by working together. Meyers says the typical cost in Vermont will be about $12.50 per student in each subject area, as opposed to the $22 it has cost in the past.

Some educators have worried that the combined testing format won’t accurately reflect the standards or curricula that are unique to each state.
