A 19th-century Lake Champlain cargo schooner is headed south to New York City.

The Lois McClure left Burlington today on a four-month trip through the Lake Champlain Barge Canal, down the Hudson River to New York and back.

The McClure was launched last year by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum as a floating ambassador to the region’s nautical and commercial history.

A century ago hundreds of vessels like the McClure carried cargo up and down the Hudson River, Lake Champlain corridor between New York, Burlington and points north.

Sailors for the Maritime Museum will dock the McClure at a number of points between Burlington and New York where it will be open to the public.
