The search will resume today for a Swanton man missing after the canoe he was in capsized in a storm near Highgate Springs.

Twenty-one-year-old Phillip Patch and 26-year-old Thomas Lapine were canoeing on Lake Champlain Tuesday when the boat capsized in high waves off Old Dock Road.

Police say both men tried to swim to an island. Lapine was picked up by boaters who had seen the canoe tip over.

Police say neither man was wearing a life jacket.

Vermont State Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, U.S, Coast Guard and firefighters from North Hero, Swanton and Alburgh helped search the waters on Tuesday. Police say the search was suspended at 7 p.m. due to severe weather.
