A candidate for secretary of state is asking for a probe into what he says is voter fraud.

Eugene Bifano, of Warren, a Republican challenging Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz, wants the state to look into two out-of-state residents who he says have voted in Vermont elections.

In a letter Friday to Markowitz and Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell, he asked them to investigate.

Markowitz, a Democrat running for a sixth term, says there’s no indication of voter fraud.

One case involves a man from Canada who listed a Barre adult daycare center as his primary residence, even though the building hasn’t been a primary residence in more than 10 years. In the other, a man who had registered to vote in New York requested an absentee ballot to vote in Vermont.

Markowitz says that under Vermont law, someone who moves abroad can stay registered at the address where they last lived, and a person who moves out of state intending to return at a specific time can keep voting in Vermont.
