Senate Committee Advances End-Of-Life Bill

A key Senate committee approved a bill today that would permit terminally ill patients to end their lives with a prescription medication.

The Health and Welfare Committee voted unanimously in favor of the proposal.

But the bill still faces a hearing before a skeptical Judiciary Committee before the full Senate votes.

The Judiciary Committee chairman predicts that his panel will oppose the bill.

Senator Claire Ayer heads the Health and Welfare Committee and is convinced the bill will pass.

"I don’t think it’s going to be a slam dunk, but I think it will be comfortable enough," Ayer said.

Senate leaders have committed to allowing a vote on the bill before the full Senate. It’s unclear how soon that debate will take place.
