Senate committee backs Charles Smith’s nomination as administration secretary

A committee of the Vermont Senate has recommended the confirmation of Charles Smith as secretary of administration. The Government Operations Committee’s vote came after a morning hearing in which senators directed their frustration about the administration shakeup at Smith.

Senators complained the changes among cabinet secretaries and commissioners disrupted their work and left a sense of disarray in state government. Earlier this month Smith swapped his job as human services secretary with Michael Smith, who formerly was administration secretary.

Charles Smith says he disagrees with the characterization of crises in state government. He says the administration is tackling challenges and solving them.
