Police say a woman was sexually assaulted in downtown Burlington Monday.

Authorities say she was walking alone early yesterday morning when she was grabbed from behind by a stranger and sexually assaulted.

The woman was walking on Main Street between South Williams and South Prospect streets.

Police say the suspect was last seen fleeing the area.

WCAX-TV reports that he’s described as being in his late 20s, about 6-feet-tall, with curly brown hair that hangs over his eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark t-shirt and tan shorts.

UVM has issued a campus alert. Police will not say if the victim was a University of Vermont student.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to call the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.
