Shaftsbury officials are studying the possibility of becoming host to Vermont’s second prison work camp.

The group is planning to visit the existing work camp in St. Johnsbury.

Select Board Chairman Wynn Metcalfe says the final decision on whether to host a work camp will be made by the residents of Shaftsbury.

Metcalfe says the committee will make a report to the Select Board.

Board and committee member Cinda Morse says the people at the work camp are neighbors and friends who made bad choices.

Some local residents are skeptical of the idea.

The Corrections Department would like to build a second work camp in southern Vermont.
