Shaftsbury to vote on tax incentive for vacant factory

Shaftsbury residents will vote on Town Meeting Day whether to cap property taxes on the former Stanley Tool Works to help attract a new occupant for the plant.

Bernstein Display, which makes store mannequins, is looking at moving into the building, which is assessed at $1.3 million. Its current tax bill is just over $27,000 a year. The Select Board is asking voters to keep it at that level for the next three years. The company says it may employ up to 165 people in Shaftsbury within three years.
