The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources says it will fine a Bennington County waste hauler for exceeding its dumping limits at the Shaftsbury landfill.
The agency says it is assessing TAM Incorporated an $8,500 penalty and has ordered it to pay an equal amount toward an environmental project — for a total of $17,000.
The company was allowed to dump up to 1,000 tons of waste a year at the town landfill. But the agency says that from July to October of 2005, TAM dumped 1,445 tons of waste at the landfill, including 395 tons from towns other than Shaftsbury.
TAM owner Trevor Mance says the violation is based on a misunderstanding. He says the company was asked by the town to fill a section of the landfill so it could be capped.
