Shumlin Defensive About Personal Land Buy

Governor Peter Shumlin is calling a land deal with friends that allowed him to purchase 27 acres in East Montpelier for $35,000 a good deal for everyone involved.

But Shumlin wouldn’t answer all of reporters’ questions about the deal and he walked out of a Thursday afternoon news conference when pressed for details.

Shumlin says he was looking to buy a 182-acre farm so he could live there during his years as governor. But, he said, some friends wanted to live on the farm permanently.

So his friends bought the farm and sold him the 27-acre parcel where he plans to build his own home.

Shumlin wouldn’t identify his friends, saying he didn’t want to talk about the details of his private life.
