Shumlin proposes trimming legislative session

The head of the state Senate says Vermont lawmakers should trim their scheduled 18-week session by two weeks.

During an organizational meeting today, Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin told his colleagues he wants the full Senate to meet only on Tuesdays and Fridays, with Wednesdays and Thursdays devoted purely to committee work for the first eight weeks.

Since lawmakers are paid only when the full Legislature is in session, Shumlin says trimming the session by two weeks amounts to a 14 percent cut in pay for legislators.

He says that’s fitting, given that other parts of state government are facing cuts and Vermonters’ household budgets are squeezed.
