(Host) Skiing and snowboarding are now the official state sports of Vermont, thanks to some schoolchildren in Swanton.

At the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum in Stowe today, Governor Peter Shumlin signed a bill into law that was proposed by a group of fifth and sixth graders.

With the help of teachers and a lawmaker, they researched various sports and testified on behalf of their proposal in the Legislature.

The bill received final approval earlier this year.

The students, who are now in high school, attended today’s event.

Vermont is believed to be the third state with skiing and snowboarding as state sports.
