Sluggish economy drives boost in camping reservations

Camping reservations at Vermont state parks are running ahead of schedule this year, and park officials believe the sluggish economy may be why.

Craig Whipple, state park director for the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, says 10,375 spots have been reserved already for the upcoming season, a 7 percent boost from last year at this time.

He says bookings speed up when the economy slows down, and that it could be gas prices that are driving people to stay closer to home this summer.

Thirty-two of Vermont’s 52 state parks have campgrounds, and there are about 2,200 campsites.
