Smokestack demolition injures seven

Police in Berlin say it’s unlikely any criminal charges will be filed in the smokestack demolition this weekend that injured seven people.

Sergeant Don Gendron says if anything happens, it’s likely the matter will be left to lawyers to decide whether any civil action will be taken.

A smokestack being demolished at the city’s former pulp mill sent showers of debris into the air when it fell onto a pile of debris on the ground. Three smokestacks were demolished on Saturday. The first two went down without a hitch, but the third and final smokestack resisted two blasts and had to have its base torched to loosen rebar holding it up.

One woman suffered a cracked rib and a broken rib when she was hit by flying concrete.
