(HOST) A Vermont National Guard member just back from Iraq says the National Guard failed to help his wife and stepson as promised during the time he was overseas. Barbara Benware had surgery for Crohn’s disease the same month her husband Archie left for Iraq last year.

Archie Benware, a 28-year guard veteran, says the guard promises to help families of its deployed members. Barbara Benware says he repeatedly called the guard’s family assistance program for help with such things as fixing a broken furnace and building a chicken coop. She says she finally stopped calling.

National Guard spokeswoman, Lieutenant Veronica Saffo, says the Guard tried repeatedly to help the Benwares.
