Some use Green-Up Day to dump garbage

It’s meant as a community-spirited event, but Saint Johnsbury officials say some people are turning Green-Up Day into a free-dumping day.

Town Manager Mike Welch says the town spent $3,000 last year to clean up after people who dumped junk and trash by the roads.

He says the problem repeated itself with this year’s annual Green-Up Day.

Welch says some apparently see Green-Up Day dumping as a way to avoid the increasing cost of trash and junk disposal.

He says some people also tried to dump household items at the Green Up Day disposal site Saturday, but were told the event was for roadside trash.
