CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter is donating his personal and professional papers to the New Hampshire Historical Society.

The society announced the donation Monday and that Souter has agreed to join its board.

Souter has been a society member since 1971. He previously served on its board from 1976 until 1985.

His papers will become part of the society’s archives collection where they will be securely stored and cataloged. Under the terms of the donation, the papers will not be available to the public or the society’s staff for research for an unspecified number of years.

Souter retired from the court in June.
