People in southeastern Vermont are waking up to driving rain this morning and more than a thousand households are without power.

More than 300 homes are without power this morning in Halifax and Townshend and about 400 in Brattleboro. Dozens of homes in Dummerston, Putney and Newfane also have power outages.

Amtrak has canceled train service in the Northeast, including the Vermonter and Ethan Allen routes. Elementary schools are closed in Whitingham and Halifax.

Some residents from areas that were hard hit by Irene last year say they’ve been on edge, but are relieved so far that the storm has caused little damage.
