A group of sportsmen is taking Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss to task for suggesting that greater handgun control is needed in the state’s largest city.

The Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs says regulation of firearms is the sole province of the Legislature and that’s how it should remain.

Federation vice president Evan Hughes says any government discussion about guns will be taken seriously.

Kiss says he believes Burlington needs to examine how easy it is to get handguns in the wake of two shootings in Burlington this year.

He says he’s not advocating gun control but promoting an open debate.
