St. Johnsbury mulls taxing tax-exempt properties

Looking for new tax revenues, the town of St. Johnsbury is considering taxing some of its tax-exempt schools, churches and state property.

The town has 149 tax-exempt properties, and is investigating the possibility of taxing some based on how often they require police or fire service. Among the potential targets include: Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital and St. Johnsbury Academy.

In a meeting, members of the St. Johnsbury Finance Committee said the proposed tax could be voluntary, or undertaken through a voter-approved charter change.

Bob Hersey is chief financial officer of the hospital. He says it’s open to offering some sort of payment in lieu of taxes.
