One of St. Johnsbury’s largest employers is closing, leaving 190 people without work.

Lydall Inc., which produces heat shields for cars at its Vermont manufacturing plant, blamed the cost-cutting measure on a downturn in the U.S. automotive market.

The company plans to move the Vermont operations to North Carolina late next year.

It’s unknown when the layoffs will take place.

Tom Smith, chief financial officer for Lydall, said some Vermont employees may have a chance to relocate to the company’s Hamptonville, N.C., plant.

State officials say Tuesday’s announcement is one of the largest layoffs to hit the area in some time.
