Saint Johnsbury Police Chief Paul Devenger is being charged by the town with conduct unbecoming a police officer.

Devenger was charged with interfering in an accident investigation involving his twin brother. The brother was cleared of an allegation that he left the scene of an accident, but later resigned from the state police.

Conduct unbecoming is not a criminal charge and it will be handled by the town.

Town Manager Mike Welch says it will be up to the select board to decide what to do.

Chief Devenger has been on paid leave since August 3.
