The Vermont Department of Health has selected a California firm to operate a proposed mobile methadone clinic.

State officials say California Detoxification Programs was chosen over another applicant because of the company’s experience in providing treatment for heroin addiction. The San Francisco based private, for-profit firm runs 13 clinics in California.

According to the Health Department, the company will operate two mobile methadone facilities in Vermont. One clinic will make daily visits to Newport, the other will stop in Saint Johnsbury.

The new clinics are scheduled to begin operating on October 1.
