(Host) Problems with a major computer data network caused widespread Internet outages in Vermont today.

State government was one of the institutions affected. Its computer network went down for about 90 minutes.

Problems were traced to a connection provided by Level Three Communications, a Colorado company.

The company says it doesn’t know what caused the problem or how many customers were affected.

A consortium that manages data networks for ten small phone companies in Vermont, and three other states, says there have been problems with connecting to the Level Three network since Sunday.

State officials say part of the problem was a fiber-optic line in Albany, New York, that was cut. There were also data problems in South Burlington.

Level Three says service has been restored.
