The state of Vermont is offering schools incentives to reduce their carbon footprint this winter.
Schools that reduce the most carbon emissions per student will receive $5,000 for energy-saving building renovations.
By signing up for the Vermont School Carbon Challenge schools can monitor their building’s carbon savings on a Web-based educational site.
The site estimates savings from changing a light bulb to cleaning out appliances and lowering the thermostat.
Governor Jim Douglas, Agency of Natural Resources Secretary George Crombie, and other state officials kicked off the challenge Tuesday.
The contest runs from October 1 to March 31.
