State May Intervene in Federal Review of Vermont Yankee Uprate

The Vermont Department of Public Service may ask to intervene as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reviews the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant’s request to boost its power output.

Department Commissioner David O’Brien says the NRC hasn’t adequately addressed concerns raised by state nuclear engineer Bill Sherman. Those concerns have to do with how well Vermont Yankee’s safety systems would respond to an accident when the plant is being run harder.

The nuclear watchdog group New England Coalition also has asked to intervene in NRC hearings.
