State says summer tourism numbers mixed

Vermont tourism officials say it’s rain and not high gas prices that has kept tourism down so far this summer.

But officials are still hopeful the summer tourist season will turn out to be a successful one.

Tourism Commissioner Bruce Hyde says the more expensive resorts and properties are doing well while business at moderately priced resorts is mixed.

State statistics show summer is the busiest time for tourism. In 2005, Vermont had 13.4 million tourists, 5 million of those in the summer. They brought in $508.7 million.

Hyde says the weak U.S. dollar is continuing to attract more Canadian tourists.

But experts are still concerned that high energy prices and a weakening economy could keep people from coming to Vermont.
