State scaling back Springfield roadway plans

The state of Vermont is scaling back plans to rebuild a five-mile section of the roadway in Springfield that runs from U.S. Route 5 to the center of town.

The state agreed to rebuild Vermont Route 143 as part of its agreement with the town in exchange for the community agreeing to host the state’s newest prison.

But state highway engineers say the full cost would be $8 million and it would be years before the money is available.
Instead, state is proposing a $3 million project that would rebuild the worst sections of the road and repave other portions.

But Selectman Mark Blanchard says the road needs more than a three-year fix.
